Ever been walking around Canada when you suddenly hear someone speaking Tagalog nearby?

Or maybe you’ve gone to a Filipino grocery store, attended a community event, or spotted a familiar kababayan at work and thought: “Grabe, ang dami pala natin dito!”

Well, you’re not imagining it.

From Vancouver to Toronto, Winnipeg to Calgary, Filipinos have become an important and fast-growing part of life in Canada. Behind every number are stories of hard work, new beginnings, families reunited, careers built, and loved ones back home who remain close to the heart.

So, gaano nga ba talaga karami ang mga Pinoy sa Canada? Here are 7 surprising facts about Filipinos in Canada that might make you feel even prouder to be part of this growing community.

1. There are more than 957,000 Filipinos in Canada

Yes—almost one million! According to Statistics Canada, more than 957,000 people in Canada reported being Filipino in the 2021 Census. That means you could fill a very, very large number of basketball courts, karaoke parties, and family reunions with the Filipino community in Canada.

And this community is not standing still. The Filipino population in Canada has grown dramatically over the past few decades.

Ang dami pala talaga natin!

2. Filipinos make up 2.6% of Canada’s population

A community of more than 957,000 people represented 2.6% of Canada’s total population in the 2021 Census.

Filipinos were also the fourth-largest racialized group in Canada at that time. That might sound like just a percentage on paper, but think about what it means in everyday life.

It means Filipino nurses caring for patients. Filipino entrepreneurs building businesses. Filipino parents raising the next generation. Filipino workers contributing across industries. Filipino food, music, language, and traditions becoming part of the Canadian story.

From pancit at the potluck to a cheerful “Kabayan!” across the room, the Filipino presence in Canada is hard to miss.

3. The Filipino population has grown almost fourfold since 1996

Here’s one of the biggest “wow” numbers on the list: Statistics Canada reports that the Filipino population in Canada grew nearly fourfold between 1996 and 2021.

That growth represents decades of Filipinos coming to Canada to work, study, build careers, reunite with family, and create new lives. And behind that growth are countless personal stories.

The first winter. The first Canadian job. The first time missing Christmas back home. The first apartment. The first promotion. The first time bringing family members to Canada.

Every big population statistic is really made up of thousands upon thousands of individual journeys.

4. More than 757,000 Philippine-born immigrants were living in Canada

In the 2021 Census, 757,410 people reported that they were born in the Philippines and had immigrated to Canada. At that time, the Philippines was the third-largest source country for immigrants living in Canada, following India and China. That is a major connection between the two countries.

For many Filipinos, moving to Canada does not mean leaving the Philippines behind. Family ties often remain strong across thousands of kilometres. There are still birthdays celebrated over video calls and balikbayan boxes packed with care. There are messages asking, “Kumain ka na?”

And, of course, there are many Filipinos working hard in Canada while continuing to support loved ones back home. For many Pinoys, home can be in Canada, but they can still have a very special place in the Philippines.

5. Most Filipinos in Canada were born in the Philippines—but a growing generation was born in Canada

The Filipino community in Canada includes both newcomers and families who have already built deep roots in the country. According to Statistics Canada, 73.9% of Filipinos in Canada were born in the Philippines, while 24.7% were born in Canada. That means the Filipino-Canadian story now spans generations.

You have immigrants who can remember exactly what life was like before moving to Canada. You also have Filipino Canadians growing up with a unique combination of cultures. Baka kumakain sila ng tapsilog for breakfast, poutine later in the day, tapos nagsasalita sila or nakakarinig ng naghahalo-halong English, French, Tagalog, Bisaya, Ilocano, or other Philippine languages at home.

The result is a community that continues to evolve while finding new ways to keep Filipino culture alive. Be proud, ka-BC!

6. Around 738,000 people in Canada could speak Tagalog

“Uy, Pinoy ka?”

There’s a reason hearing Tagalog in Canada might be more common than you think. Statistics Canada reported around 737,600 Tagalog speakers in Canada based on 2021 Census data. Tagalog was among the country’s most widely spoken non-official languages.

So the next time you hear a familiar “Ano ba ’yan!” in a grocery aisle, there is a decent chance you have found another kababayan.

Language is also one of the strongest ways Filipino families stay connected to their roots. Even across generations, words like salamat, ingat, anak, lola, lolo, ate, kuya and, of course, kain tayo, continue to carry a little piece of home.

7. The Filipino population in Canada could reach 1.7 million to 2.4 million by 2041

The story is far from over. According to Statistics Canada’s population projections, the Filipino population in Canada could reach somewhere between 1.7 million and 2.4 million people by 2041, representing roughly 4.0% to 4.6% of Canada’s population.

Imagine that: more Filipino communities and Filipino businesses, more Filipino food and festivals. More stories from home to enjoy…at of course naman, mas maraming karaoke nights!

Of course, projections are not guarantees. But they show just how significant the Filipino community could become in Canada in the years ahead.

More Than Just Numbers

It is easy to look at statistics and see only percentages. But behind those numbers are real people who took a chance on a new life, working long shifts, and adjusting to Canadian winters.

These are hardworking Filipinos building careers and businesses, raising children between cultures.

While many of them are missing family back home, they send support when they can. They prove, every single day, just how much Filipinos contribute to the communities around them.

So the next time you spot a kababayan on the train, hear Tagalog at the supermarket, or discover another Filipino restaurant in your neighbourhood, you can smile and say:

“Ang dami pala talaga natin!”

And wherever life in Canada takes you, the connection to home can remain strong.

At BCRemit, we’re proud to help Filipinos in Canada stay connected with the people who matter most by making it simple and convenient to send money to loved ones in the Philippines.
